Therapy for First-Generation Adults

You Can Honor Where You Come From Without Losing Who You Are.

Understanding the First-Generation Experience

Being first-generation often means learning how to navigate a world your family could not fully prepare you for. There may be no guide, no blueprint, and no one who can tell you exactly how to move through school, work, relationships, parenthood, or unfamiliar systems. You are often figuring it out for yourself while helping your family understand it along the way.

You may carry the pressure to make your family’s sacrifices worth it. Success can feel deeply personal, but it can also feel like something you have to keep proving. Choosing a different path, setting boundaries, or defining your own values may bring guilt, even when those choices are healthy and necessary.

"Ni de aquí, ni de allá."

Neither fully from here nor fully from there.

Across cultures, many first-generation adults know the feeling of moving between different worlds without feeling completely at home in either one. You may feel too different in one space and not fully understood in another, all while trying to honor where you come from and become your own person.

There can be guilt in changing, grief in feeling misunderstood, and pressure to fit into both worlds at once. Over time, it can become difficult to know which values are truly yours and which ones you learned to carry for everyone else.

Therapy offers a space to explore your identity without having to choose one part of yourself over another. It can help you understand the roles you have carried, decide what you want to bring forward, and create a life that honors your family while still making room for who you are becoming.

Therapy Can Help You

  • Explore identity, culture, and belonging.

  • Clarify your own values, needs, and priorities.

  • Navigate family expectations and generational pressure.

  • Set boundaries without feeling disloyal or ungrateful.

  • Work through guilt connected to success, independence, or change.

  • Understand the impact of being the translator, guide, or problem-solver.

  • Break generational patterns while preserving meaningful connection.

  • Build a life that feels authentic to you.

You Do Not Have to Figure It All Out Alone.

You have spent so much of your life finding the way forward for yourself and for the people you love. Therapy can be a place where you no longer have to carry every answer, every expectation, or every decision on your own.
